Yes, intelli.tours, based on extensive experience and knowledge of Oaxaca, is happy to help you with flights with recommendations and advice,

  • A great arrival time into Oaxaca1:30 pm.
  • A relaxing departure from Oaxaca at 2:05 pm.
  • Be sure to consider what connecting time to from Dallas.

AeroMexico is a reputable airline with good connections from the US to Oaxaca

  • Flights arrive at 3:55 pm with a comfortable connection in Mexico City.
  • AeroMexico is often the best choice from the West Coast.
  • Check www.aeromexico.com no matter what as many times the exact same flights with a US carrier connecting to AeroMexico can be substantially less if purchased directly through AeroMexico.

United offers non-stop service to Oaxaca through Houston.

  • This option also offers the same ease of immigration and customs in Oaxaca, though you will not arrive to Oaxaca until almost 7:30 pm
  • United’s departure from Oaxaca is an early 7:50 am flight.

Consider connections through Guadalajara.

  • The Mexico City airport is perfectly safe and acceptable.
  • Guadalajara’s airport is smaller, very easy to navigate, and can be a more relaxing connection.

For all fights to Oaxaca that require a connection with a Mexican carrier, pay attention to airline offers the connecting flights. The options are:  Aeromexico, Interjet, or Volaris.

  • AeroMexico, Interjet , and Volaris use jet aircraft.
  • AeroMar uses turboprop aircraft.
  • United flights that do not connect with United’s nonstop from Houston to Oaxaca connect in Mexico City with AeroMar’s turboprop flights.
  • Delta flights to Oaxaca  connect with AeroMexico in Mexico City or Guadalajara.

A particularly useful website  to research airfares and find flights is Matrix Airfare Search.

  • You cannot book flights on this site so make sure to copy the details of the flight and fare information in the last steps to share with a travel agent for booking flights.
  • Always search for a 1-day-before option for our planned outbound flight and a 1-day-after option for our planned return flight. Sometimes the cost of leaving a day earlier or staying an extra night can be minimal when weighing the comfort of better flight times, and/or smoother connections.

The water in the Hotel Quinta Real Oaxaca is perfectly fine for you to drink.

The ice in drinks in the restaurants where you will dine is also fine to consume..

What about eating street food or food in local markets?

Eating street food, along with foods sold in the markets, can be a highlight of travel, providing a delicious — and often inexpensive — way to experience authentic regional cuisine and connect with the local culture. Such food, however, can pose the possibility of gastrointestinal discomfort, no matter where you are in the world.

What we have learned in our travels is that in regard to food safety, our own hands can be our worst enemy. Therefore, we will provide you with a package of antibacterial wipes to use on your journey. We highly recommend that you use them often, especially before eating, and that you ask us for more should you run out.

Here are a few tips eating on your Oaxaca journey:

  • Take our advice and recommendations as to which which foods to choose — and which to avoid — as well as on the most reliable places to eat.
  • Avoid any undercooked meats or eggs.
  • Avoid fresh greens in markets and on the street. (Consuming them in restaurants is generally fine.)
  • Avoid raw vegetables, especially if unpeeled.
  • Eat only peeled fruits.

Please contact intelli.tours with any questions you may have necessary expenses in Oaxaca.

Should I have any local currency when I depart?

Yes, we recommend that you travel with a small amount of local currency. This will make it easy to purchase something in a local airport during a flight layover or a delay or in case of an unexpected event along the way. Having some local currency also means you won’t be inconvenienced by having to race to a bank to withdraw cash on arrival in Mexico.

We recommend that to start your trip you have a minimum of 1,000 Mexican pesos (US$52 as of May. 1, 2019).

Check with your local bank to see if they sell Mexican pesos as this can be a good option as many banks will buy back from you any Mexican pesos your bring home.

Please contact intelli.tours with any questions you may have about currency exchange.

Should I plan on using cash or credit cards?

You should plan on using both cash and credit cards on your journey.

You can use credit or debit cards for purchases in local stores in the city of Oaxaca; however, purchases in areas you will visit outside Oaxaca, and in local food and artisan markets, are mostly limited to cash in Mexican pesos.

Please also check to see if your credit card and/or debit card charges a foreign currency transaction fee. You may also consider looking into cards that do not charge such fees.

Check with your local bank to see if they sell Mexican pesos as this can be a good option as many banks will buy back from you any Mexican pesos your bring home.

Please contact intelli.tours with any questions you may have about cash or credit cards in Oaxaca.

Should I notify my bank and credit card issuer of my travel dates?

Yes, we absolutely recommend that you notify your bank and credit card issuer of your travel dates to avoid any inconveniences while on your journey.

Please contact intelli.tours with any questions you may have about credit card use in Oaxaca.

How should I plan to exchange money?

Your local bank may sell foreign currency and also buy back any foreign currency you do not use on your trip. This can be a convenient option that alleviates the need to visit ATMs or exchange houses during your journey.

ATMs, however, often are the most convenient means to get local currency while traveling. ATMs are plentiful in the city of Oaxaca and are an easy way to acquire Mexican pesos. Making an ATM withdrawal can be more secure than carrying cash to exchange, and the exchange rate offered is usually very competitive. Please check with your bank about what fees you might be assessed for cash withdrawals in Mexico. Also, many US banks charge a foreign currency withdrawal fee of about US$5.

Exchanging US dollars is another option for acquiring Mexican pesos. There are currency exchange houses in the vicinity of the Quinta Real Oaxaca Hotel where you will be staying. But the process will take more time and may be less convenient than the other options, and you will be bound those businesses’ hours of operation, which may or may not coincide with your schedule.

Please contact intelli.tours with any questions you may have about currency exchange.

Travel Safety Oaxaca, Mexico

Is it safe to travel to Oaxaca, Mexico?

Yes. Oaxaca is one of the safest states in Mexico, and Oaxaca City is particularly safe.

And, despite what we hear on new reports about violence in Mexico, relative to overall national safety, Mexico is ranked by the US State Department at Level 2 —  the same category as major US travel destinations like France, Spain, the U.K, Germany, Belgium, and Denmark.

RC PhotoJourneys and our tour operator intelli.tours take your safety and well-being seriously.

Please read below for more details.

General Safety In Mexico

Given the increasing reports of crime and questions about safety in Mexico, we would like to provide you with the facts and the necessary information to assure you of your safety on traveling with RC PhotoJourneys to Oaxaca, Mexico.

As we stated above, crime in Mexico is isolated to specific regions and areas of the country and Oaxaca is not one of those areas or regions.

Under US State Department guidelines, there are four categories, based on the risks they present to US visitors to a particular country.

  • Level 1: “Exercise normal precautions”
  • Level 2: “Exercise increased caution”
  • Level 3: “Reconsider travel”
  • Level 4: “Do not travel”

Mexico is ranked at Level 2 — in the same category as major US travel destinations like France, Spain, the U.K, Germany, Belgium, and Denmark.

(Yes, 5 Mexican states were ranked as “Level 4: Do not travel” locations. Oaxaca is NOT one of those.)

It is also important to keep in mind that Mexico’s most crime-ridden places are not tourist destinations and that many major U.S. cities — including Baltimore, Detroit, Chicago, and Washington DC — have much higher violence,  general crime and murder rates per capita than many Mexican cities.

Safety in Oaxaca, Mexico

The city of Oaxaca — with its UNESCO World Heritage status, archaeological ruins, colonial architecture, and a population of 255,000 —is one of the safest cities in Mexico.

In fact, the US State Department, on its Mexico Travel Advisory page, specifically states that there are NO travel restrictions or advisories for Oaxaca City.

intelli.tours travels to Oaxaca frequently, and we always feel safe and secure there. Yet wherever we travel, we always follow these basic protocols — and we advise that you do the same:

  • Don’t flash around expensive items such as jewelry, cameras or phones.
  • Remember to keep all credit cards and your passport stashed somewhere safe.
  • Organize your cash privately to avoid displaying money when making purchases.
  • Don’t walk alone at night.

Your intelli.tours Intelligence Officer, who speaks Spanish with native fluency, will also be there with you 24/7 to ensure your safety.

Register your International Trip with the US State Department

We highly recommend that once you have received your intelli.tours itinerary details that you register yourself with the US State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP is a free service that provides US citizens traveling or living abroad the latest security updates from the nearest US embassy or consulate and enables the US embassy or consulate to contact you in an emergency.

RC PhotoJourneys and our tour operator intelli.tours take your safety and well-being seriously. We invite you to contact us with any concerns or questions you may have.
